Routers Technology - A Gateway To Internet

Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. From simple communicating to complex operations, majority of the tasks today depend on the internet communication. Where there cannot be anyone throughput the globe who wouldn’t know what internet is, there are only a few who know that it is the routers due to which we are able to use internet.

When multiple networks are joined, devices, known as ‘Routers’, come into play.  Routers connect two or more networks by forwarding or interchanging data packets. A Router is on the third layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. A good example which everyone can relate to is the Internet Protocol (IP) Router like the DSL or a cable modem broadband router which connects the Local Area Network (LAN) in the home to the Internet’s Wide Area Network (WAN).

The Purpose of the Router
In communications, the broadband is a medium for data transmission which is both high speed and high capacity. The broadband technology is capable of transmitting data, voice and video at the same time over great distances. It is the router in the home or office that gathers the information transmitted by the broadband and, through a modem, delivers it to the personal computer.

Among the most used Routers are the following.

  • Broadband Router : This creates the wireless signal in the home or office. It employs modems that have both phone jacks and Ethernet LAN connections.
  • Wireless Router : This emits a wireless signal whereby any PC or laptop within its range, can connect to it and thus to the Internet. All that is required is a user id and password that comes with the router, to log on to the router.
  • Edge Router: This is located at the edge of the network and configured to an external border gateway protocol.
  • Subscriber Edge Router : The Inter-Provider Border Router and core Routers are all routers with different roles to play.


The Router helps to lower the data load by delivering data packets in an organized manner. They make sure that there is a reliable and steady connection between networks. They are also equipped with alternative ports to take the place of the main ports if there is a failure. Wireless Routers, as their name suggests, function without wires and enables devices within a given radius to connect to the network.

Advancements in Routers
Routers are no more just plain signal switchers; the technology has evolved considerable, rendering the routers much more functions than any of the earliest routers could perform. The multi format compatibility, swappable circuit boards and automatic functions which can be time controlled are pretty common today. Routers are being put to more advanced applications and the scope of the uses is also increasing.

With technology advancing rapidly, there are two new wireless standards in the horizon. The 802.11ac will operate in the 5 GHz band and the 802.11ad will operate over the 60 GHz band but over shorter distances. These are expected to be certified in 2013.

The end of the year, Wireless Internet2012, saw Linksys announce their Smart Wi-Fi Router AC 1750 Video Pro. It is powered by the 802.11ac and has Wi-Fi speeds measuring from 450 to 1300 Mbps. In other words, it will be three times faster than the existing 802.11n devices. These new routers have greater ranges and are more reliable. These Smart Wi-Fi routers have simplified connection of devices too. The ‘Simple Tap’ allows the user to connect to the internet with just the tap of a button or the scanning of a tag. This makes it easier to connect devices to the network. Among the technology giants, CISCO is making its own innovations to transform the home network into a platform for services and solutions and enhance customer satisfaction.

With routers technology being improved, hardware is also evolving. With several of applications depending upon routers, the devices have a wide scope ahead.
