The Ever Evolving Operating Systems

The fundamental utility of a computer is derived from its operating system. In the absence of an operating system a computer is no more than a collection of some electronic devices and equipment. Just as communication is the lifeblood of an organization, an operating system is the lifeblood of a computing device or workstation.

The invention of computer leads to numerous other inventions that are subject to facilitate human beings. The tasks that consume volumetric resources on manual basis are accomplished using much lesser amount of resources when done electronically. It is therefore rightly said that computers and the installed operating systems bring in efficiency in the work done.

There are a number of purposes that operating systems serve. Basically, an operating system is the touch-point between the user and computer hardware. It manages different software and hardware installed and assembled within the computer. Data ProtectionSystem security is ensured through the operating system. In its absence, the device is highly vulnerable to viruses and malfunction. Most importantly, it acts as an interface through which the user can perform several functions and commands.

History reveals that MIT’s Tape Director was the very first operating system that was introduced in the year 1954. The automobile industrial giant General Motors holds the title of implementing the second operating system of the world. This operating system is commonly referred to as General Motors OS or GM-NAA I/O. Though this information is not available at numerous web pages over the internet, authentic sources validate the fact. General Motors’ owned research laboratory was first to go through the implementation process in 1955.

Soon after GM, IBM came out to be the next company releasing its operating system in the name of FORTRAN back in 1956. Though the version gained popularity, IBM did not release the references of source programs and scripting. Later on in 1959, the issue of sharing programs among different workstations was solved by the Share User Group. This system was simply an advanced version of GM-NAA I/O so that companies can be provided with the facility of sharing of programs.Operating system

The very famous DOS (Disk Operating System) was introduced in the early 1970’s, and innumerable advancements and progressive steps were taken throughout the decade. A number of updated versions were introduced every year so that highest level of utility can be obtained from a single operating system. The decade of 1980’s saw other operating systems like Mac OS(Macintosh Operating System) UNIX
, Amiga OS, Atari TOS, and finally the Windows Operating System.

Further research and development on the previously introduced operating systems was carried in the decade of 1990’s. Linux and Windows Millennium Edition were introduced in the year 2000. Windows XP and Windows Server were launched in 2001 and 2003 respectively. On the other hand, Linux kept on releasing its updated versions one after the other since 2004 to 2009. In the same year, Windows brought forward its Windows Vista OS.

Both the companies are still working on their operating systems to beat each other. The advancement and technical features do not seem to stop for now. However, the latest rival in the industry and which is also leading at present is the most famous Android OS. Though Android was primarily developed and launched by Open-Handset Alliance, it is now entirely under the ownership and maintenance of Google. Open-Handset Alliance holds the title of technical development, whereas Google remained the financier throughout the course of development of Android.Process

Android is basically a Linux-based OS and is primarily targeted towards touch screens and smart phones that are at their peaks at present. As against the initial operating systems that were quite basic in terms of features, speed, and configuration, Android is pretty advanced, practical, and fast. However, technical advancement doesn’t mean that this application has compromised on user friendliness. Be it a toddler or an aged business tycoon, working on Android is easy, exciting, and engaging.

People prefer Android also because of its compatible applications. Google Play has numerous apps for Android that one can easily download for added features and programs. Since the use of touch screens and smart phones is increasing day by day, Android is experiencing a mounting market share with the passage of time. From less than 3% market share at the time Android started gaining market recognition in 2009, the operating system now captures more than 60% market share worldwide.

The technical advancement of operating systems and the ever increasing use of internet & mobile devices is propelling the next wave of innovative & compact operating systems. The future of operating systems seems set for a dramatic change and an even better user experience.
